The Hidden Corners of Athens – One
Documenting unknown spots in the city

Athens is undoubtedly one of the best known tourism spots in the world. Its famous monuments have been seen and photographed by millions. What most people who visit don’t know is that it is a living breathing modern city with its own style. Good and bad. This week, I’m going to take you to a few of my favorite places.

An old reservoir up in the hills above the city of Athens photographed in black and white.

This is an old reservoir high about the city on the top of Veikou. It’s a bit off the beaten track and I didn’t see another soul walking on that part of the hill. I have no idea what the huge metal numbers are for but I absolutely love them. This has become one of my most iconic pictures as it’s my profile banner on X.

A building in Nea Philadelphia in Athens with a giant mural painted on the side. Photographed during golden hour.

This is one of my favourite areas of Athens, up in my part of town called Nea Philadelphia. Traditionally, this area was inhabited by Greek immigrants coming from Turkey when they were expelled from the country. It’s a vibrant and multicultural area and the stomping ground of the football team AEK, started by immigrants, back in the day. The deserted plot in front of this building used to be inhabited by one of the many fan club buildings. It has now moved nearer to the huge new stadium down the road from here.

The grand abandoned railway station in Athens taken in black and white

This is the Peloponnese railway station on the Piraeus, Athens and Peloponnese Railways. It originally opened on 30 June 1884 and it was the first railway terminal in the Greek capital. It closed in 2005. I sadly did not know it existed until last year! I peered inside and the old ticket hall is intact. It is a listed building of special architectural value and thankfully is protected from destruction and I am desperately looking forward to a possible refurbishment. It is now one of my favorite buildings in the whole city.

I will make this a regular spot on my blog, introducing you to a few of my favourite hidden corners that I have discovered by surprise while walking.
