Railway Walk

The Art of Photowalking – Railway Walk

Yesterday I wrote about the art of photowalking. Let me invite you now to walk with me along the railway. I go here often because it always offers something new to see. The railway runs all the way from Kifissia at one end of Athens to Piraeus port. I have walked the entire length on many different photowalks. This was one late afternoon where I took a total of 29 photos, none of which made my portfolio but I love nonetheless! Again, the photography isn’t the goal. The goal is really to see. A great photo is a bonus!

A deserted yard with junk around where someone has made a little refuge.
Shot number 1:

My camera stayed in my bag for most of the walk but then I felt my heart starting to come alive when I came across this scene. It was the first shot I took.

A photograph of a junkyard where someone has made a little garden with pots of plants along the fence.
Shot number 3:

I LOVE these places where someone has tried to make a space more humane by adding warm human elements like this row of flower posts with mixed real and plastic plants.

Abandoned shop fronts with a pile of broken cars on the roof.
Shot number 10:

I was struck by the pile of cars on the top of this repair shop. Difficult scene because of the crazy contrast but it really doesn’t matter to me. The two guys walking by were mildly amused and they did look back to see what I was photographing. They laughed when they saw I was shooting the shop and the cars. Street moments.

An old Mercedes repair shop with a pile of broken cars on the roof.
Shot number 16:

More car parts on the roof but I loved the light here. It makes me smile.

A train approaching on the railway track in Athens.
Shot number 20:

The train approaching (of course). Trains are one of my favourite things. Not only do I love train travel, I also like trains themselves. I minted a few as NFTs.

Some yellow street signs and poles beside the railway.
Shot number 27:

I love the scene. I am not entirely sure what these yellow poles are beside the railway but they looked so wonderful in beautiful light here.

Marble memorial statues in the yard of a marble workshop with an odd comic character made of stone beside them.
Shot number 29:

The last image of the photowalk. I just had to didn’t I? That little guy standing there got me intrigued and made me smile.

So here we are. When I look at these, I remember how I felt that day. It’s a little reminder of a great walk and the way the city can surprise and make me smile.

I hope this is some inspiration to you to go on your own photowalks. Let me know how you get on in the comments.

Thank you for reading!
